The Zaperoco Fest in La Cuesta drew nearly 2,000 attendees to celebrate the enduring cultural and historical ties between the Canary Islands and Venezuela through food, music, and community engagement.

The recent Zaperoco Fest in La Cuesta has once again highlighted La Laguna as a central hub for the shared history between the Canary Islands and Venezuela. Drawing nearly 2,000 people to the Plaza del Tranvía, the event was more than just a celebration; it served as a clear reflection of a deep-rooted relationship that continues to thrive through food, music, and community connections.

Held during the Canarian Day of Migrations, the festival emphasized how these transatlantic ties continue to shape the identity of the islands today. The attendance of officials, including Councilor for Citizen Participation Fran Hernández and Director General of Emigration José Téllez Ledesma, underscored the government's commitment to this legacy. For the Canary Islands government, such events are vital for preserving history and helping younger generations connect with the cultural narrative that has defined the region for decades.

This year’s festival featured a wide variety of food, with fifteen stalls and food trucks offering classic Venezuelan dishes like pabellón criollo, hallacas, and chicha. The event also included ethnographic displays, such as traditional clothing and drum performances, which added a deeper cultural layer to the festivities.

A highlight of the day was the arepa-making competition, which celebrated the craft behind the iconic dish. The musical program featured headliner Scarlet Linares and showcased a blend of local parrandas and Venezuelan groups. Ultimately, the Zaperoco Fest has established itself as a key community event, proving that La Laguna remains a city that embraces its diversity as a major cultural strength.
