Zálatta Performing Arts Space hosts its third annual El Patio Performing Arts Festival from January 17 to February 28 in La Laguna, showcasing diverse international and local theater.
Zálatta Performing Arts Space is hosting its third annual El Patio Performing Arts Festival from January 17 to February 28. The festival will feature theater companies from Brazil, Venezuela, and Spain, performing live at the venue in La Laguna, located at Carretera Monte de las Mercedes, 119. Additionally, an online performance of "Nada a Pehuajó" by Julio Cortázar, presented by Teatro Ayelen (an Argentine company based in Stuttgart, Germany), will be available on January 30 at 8:30 PM.
The host company, Zálatta Teatro, kicks off the festival on January 17 at 8:30 PM with "La Elvira. Historia de un emigrante" (The Elvira. Story of an Emigrant). Miguel Ángel Galbán's play is set in 1940 on Fuerteventura's Jandía peninsula. It tells the story of 106 passengers – including murderers, political prisoners, women, and children – who illegally emigrate aboard the schooner Elvira, enduring a difficult 36-day journey.
Compañía Teatro Avatar (Núcleo Caatinga) presents "Caetés, el silencio y otras ramas" (Caetés, the Silence and Other Branches) on January 23 and 24 at 8:30 PM. This play explores themes of territory and belonging in Brazil's northeastern region. It highlights the unique culture, characters, and characteristics of the sertão and caatinga landscapes, set against a complex social and political backdrop.
A week later, on January 31 at 8:30 PM, another Canarian company, Benayga Taller de Teatro, will perform. Their show, "Ánima. Lorca," features six scenes from or inspired by the works of Federico García Lorca, including "Bodas de sangre" (Blood Wedding), "Yerma," "La casa de Bernarda Alba" (The House of Bernarda Alba), "Federico y Margarita" (Federico and Margarita), "Doña Rosita la soltera" (Doña Rosita the Spinster), and "Mariana Pineda."
February's program begins on the 6th at 8:30 PM with GYM Teatral from Venezuela, presenting "Anatomía de un grito" (Anatomy of a Scream). This play is described as an invitation to move beyond being mere spectators and become witnesses to the solitude hidden behind a perfect facade, and to the madness that can be a desperate act of freedom.
Benayga Taller de Teatro returns for the festival's closing performances. On February 13 at 8:30 PM, they will present "San Valentín no sabe de amor" (Saint Valentine Knows Nothing of Love). The synopsis describes a wedding where Saint Valentine and Aphrodite, two great figures of love, debate which kind of love is superior: committed love within marriage or free, uncommitted love.
They conclude the festival on February 27 and 28 with "Se vende o… se intenta" (For Sale or… We Try). In this play, Marisa, the head of a major real estate agency, and two of her top employees try every possible method to sell an apartment that is far from perfect.
