The Canary Islands have announced the winners of the 2024/2025 Canary Islands Sports Awards, including yachtswoman Marta Mansito and, posthumously, journalist Domingo Álvarez.

The Canary Islands will celebrate the best in sports! The Councillor for Education and Sports, Poli Suárez, has announced the names of the first eleven winners of the Canary Islands Sports Awards. Among them are yachtswoman Marta Mansito and renowned journalist Domingo Álvarez, both from Tenerife. This award is a way to recognize those who have worked hard to develop sports on the islands in the 2024/2025 season.

Marta Mansito, a young yachtswoman from Tenerife representing the Gran Canaria Yacht Club, has become the world team champion in the Optimist class for the second time in a row. This time, she won as part of the Spanish team in Slovenia. In addition, she won the Spanish Championship title in Santander, where she was able to take the lead despite the difficult conditions. Marta has already received numerous awards in the Canary Islands for her achievements.

Domingo Álvarez, a journalist from Tenerife, recently passed away. He dedicated his career to covering sporting events, including six Olympic Games and numerous World and European Championships. Domingo was the director of RTVE and RNE in the Canary Islands and played an important role in promoting island sports. He became an example for many generations of sports journalists.

The awards ceremony will take place on October 3 at TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Other winners include the Heidelberg Volkswagen women's volleyball team (best team), Armide Soliveres (individual achievement), duathlete Carmelo Pérez (adaptive sport), former handball player Marta Mange (for contribution to sport and equality), and the Canary Islands Sports Federation for People with Disabilities (for promoting sport). A special award will be given to former tennis player Carla Suárez.

Recognition will also be given to those who develop traditional sports: Antonio Ramos Gordillo (Pedro Molina Award), Manuel Jesús García Fuentes (Special Federation Award), and Pila de Garrote Ichasagua (Equality Award).

The winners were chosen by two juries. One consisted of 34 communications experts from all the Canary Islands and determined the winners in seven categories of mainstream sports. The second jury, made up of five experts in Canarian sports, selected the winners in three categories of local and traditional sports.
