Workplace Safety Scrutinized After Two Serious Falls in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Authorities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have launched investigations into workplace safety protocols following two separate, serious accidents involving workers falling from heights within the last 24 hours.

Workplace safety in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is under scrutiny following two serious accidents in the capital within the last 24 hours. Both incidents involved workers falling from heights, highlighting ongoing risks in the construction and renovation sectors.

The most recent accident occurred Thursday morning on Calle Padre Anchieta, near Avenida San Sebastián. A worker fell from scaffolding, prompting a large-scale response from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), the Tenerife Fire Consortium, and local and national police. Medical teams were already treating the worker when firefighters arrived, and the National Police have since launched an investigation.

This follows a separate, severe accident just 24 hours earlier on Calle Juan Padrón. In that incident, a 39-year-old man fell 15 meters onto a garage ramp. He sustained a traumatic brain injury and remains in serious condition at the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital. The National Police’s Homicide Group is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this fall.

These back-to-back accidents have reignited concerns regarding the effectiveness of workplace safety protocols. Spanish law mandates strict safety measures for working at heights, and failures to follow these regulations are often the primary cause of such tragedies. Labor inspectors and judicial authorities are now working to determine if safety standards were met in both cases. These investigations will be crucial in establishing potential liability and ensuring that the construction industry remains under strict oversight to protect its workers.
