Work to Begin on €58 Million TF-5 Expansion to Ease Tenerife Traffic Congestion
Construction is set to begin on a 58-million-euro project to add a third southbound lane to Tenerife's heavily congested TF-5 highway, with round-the-clock work scheduled over the next 35 months.
Work is about to begin on a major project to ease congestion on the TF-5, one of Spain’s busiest roads. The construction of a third southbound lane between Guamasa and San Lázaro has been named a top priority for the Canary Islands, with a budget of over 58 million euros and an estimated completion time of 35 months.
The project is technically challenging because the road handles more than 110,000 vehicles every day, with traffic peaking at over 12,000 vehicles per hour. To keep traffic moving, crews will work around the clock, seven days a week. Officials have explained that the plan is to prioritize upgrading the Guamasa and San Lázaro interchanges and building new connections near the airport before starting work on the main highway itself.
The site is expected to be handed over to contractors next week. The project team aims to keep all lanes open as much as possible, though the demolition of the existing airport overpass will require careful coordination with local police and security forces. Most traffic disruptions on the main road are expected toward the end of the project, while the initial phases will focus on site surveys, utility work, and improvements to the TF-152.
This project is the result of close cooperation between the Tenerife Island Council and the regional government. Because the TF-5 is vital to the island’s connectivity, officials are working closely with airport authorities and law enforcement to manage the inevitable impact on traffic while the work is underway.
