A 67-year-old woman was airlifted from Teide National Park on Sunday after suffering from altitude sickness. The incident, which occurred around 1:10 p.m., highlights the logistical challenges of providing emergency medical care in high-altitude environments.
The woman experienced symptoms of altitude sickness that led to fainting, triggering a major rescue operation. After being stabilized by the Red Cross, she was flown by a rescue helicopter to the La Guancha helipad. From there, emergency medical services transported her to the Hospital del Norte, where she is currently being monitored.
The rescue required a coordinated effort from several agencies, including the Tenerife Fire Consortium, environmental rangers, local police, and the Civil Guard, all of whom helped secure the area for the medical team.
This event serves as a reminder of the risks posed by Mount Teide’s high altitude. Lower oxygen levels and changes in atmospheric pressure can be dangerous for visitors who are not used to the environment, particularly older individuals. Authorities are urging visitors to take extreme precautions when exploring the park’s challenging volcanic terrain.
