Wizz Air has entered the Spanish domestic market for the first time by launching a new direct route between Tenerife North Airport and Santiago de Compostela.

Wizz Air is entering the Spanish domestic market for the first time, marking a significant shift in strategy for the low-cost airline. Previously, the company only operated international routes within Spain. The airline has launched a new direct flight between Tenerife North Airport (TFN) and Santiago de Compostela, signaling its official move into domestic travel.

The airline is using its fuel-efficient Airbus A320 fleet for these new routes. Developed in coordination with local authorities, the move is part of a broader plan to balance visitor numbers in the Canary Islands. Samuel Ferrera, Wizz Air’s route manager, stated that the goal is to bring the company’s low-cost model to domestic travelers, making it easier for residents and tourists to move between the islands and the mainland.

Despite this expansion, Tenerife South Airport (TFS) remains the primary hub for Wizz Air’s operations in the region. The airline expects to handle 600,000 flights there this year and has already served 3.6 million passengers across seven international routes connecting to four countries. By adding domestic flights, Wizz Air is strengthening its overall presence in Spain by balancing international traffic with regional connectivity.

This expansion comes as competition in the Spanish aviation sector intensifies, with low-cost carriers constantly adjusting their networks to gain a larger share of the market. By choosing Tenerife North—an airport primarily focused on domestic and inter-island travel—Wizz Air is positioning itself to compete directly with the traditional and low-cost airlines that currently dominate domestic routes.
