"What Matters is the Word" Screens Free Today in La Laguna
The Cristino de Vera-CajaCanarias Cultural Space Foundation, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, screens the award-winning German film "What Matters is the Word" today at 7 PM, exploring the weight of verbal commitments.
The Cristino de Vera-CajaCanarias Cultural Space Foundation, working with the Goethe-Institut in Madrid, is showing the film "What Matters is the Word" today. This film makes you think about how important spoken promises are compared to official paperwork. Part of a German cinema series, the movie will be shown in its original version with Spanish subtitles.
The screening is scheduled for today, Tuesday, at 7:00 PM, at the foundation's headquarters, located at San Agustín Street, 18, in La Laguna. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
Directed by Ilker Çatak in 2019, the film won the Bronze Lola for Best Film at the 2020 German Film Awards, a major prize in German cinema. Çatak, a Turkish-German filmmaker, often explores complex human relationships and the challenges of migration in his work.
The story follows a German pilot who travels to Turkey. There, she meets a man who proposes marriage so he can settle in Germany, an offer she accepts. Their wedding ceremony, a key part of the story, relies solely on the idea that "a given word is valid," without any signatures or witnesses. What starts as a practical arrangement slowly turns into a deep exploration of emotions and feelings. It questions common ideas about the bravery it takes to face the unknown, take chances, and embrace new challenges.
