Water Pipe Collapse Leaves 10,000 Without Supply in Southern Tenerife
A major pipe collapse during excavation work in Arona left over 10,000 residents in southern Tenerife without drinking water for nine hours on Monday.
Water infrastructure management in southern Tenerife is under fire again after a major incident in Arona this Monday. A significant breakdown in the El Monte-Guargacho collector, managed by the state-owned company Acuaes, cut off the drinking water supply for over 10,000 residents in the Las Rosas area.
The trouble began when 18 meters of piping collapsed during excavation work. This left Costa del Silencio, Ten Bel, Las Galletas, Las Rosas, El Coromoto, and Guargacho without water on a day already strained by high temperatures. Canaragua, the company responsible for the local supply, had to launch an emergency repair operation that lasted nearly nine hours.
Service was restored by 11:00 p.m., though the company warned that residents might experience fluctuating water pressure while the network stabilizes. The incident highlights the vulnerability of local infrastructure when major construction projects are underway, particularly in densely populated areas where public works and essential services must be carefully coordinated.
Beyond the immediate disruption, the event underscores the need for stricter safety protocols during hydraulic works, especially as the region faces increasing water demand. Thanks to the rapid emergency response, the outage did not extend through the night, minimizing the impact on both local residents and the tourism sector.
