Villa-Lobos' "Yerma" Premieres in Tenerife
Heitor Villa-Lobos's opera "Yerma," based on Federico García Lorca's play, premiered in Europe at the Tenerife Auditorium, launching the Ópera de Tenerife season.
Tenerife Auditorium was the place to be on Tuesday night for the European debut of "Yerma," an opera by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). The opera is based on the tragic play by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936).
This performance of "Yerma," a joint effort by the Tenerife Auditorium, Teatro de la Zarzuela, the Amazonas Opera Festival (Brazil), and the Opera Festival do Theatro da Paz (Brazil), kicked off the Ópera de Tenerife season. You can catch "Yerma" again today (Thursday), Friday, and Saturday, with shows starting at 7:30 p.m.
Paco Azorín is the mastermind behind the staging, script, and set design. Brazilian conductor Luiz Fernando Malheiro is leading the music, having revisited the score. He'll be conducting the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra for three of the shows, while Pablo Urbina will take the baton for Friday's performance.
The talented soloists are joined by the singers of the Titular Choir Ópera de Tenerife-Intermezzo.
