The publication of Vilaflor de Chasna’s 2026-2027 budget guidelines has triggered a political confrontation between the local government and the opposition over the municipality's financial management and stability.

The recent publication of the 2026-2027 budget guidelines for Vilaflor de Chasna has sparked a political clash, highlighting concerns over the municipality’s financial stability as the next election cycle approaches. The document, which outlines a new economic-financial plan, has become a flashpoint between the socialist local government and the Coalición Canaria opposition.

The local government insists that this financial adjustment is a technical necessity required by state regulations rather than a sign of a solvency crisis. Officials point out that the accounting imbalance is only 20,000 euros—a minor figure compared to the council’s 795,000-euro surplus. They attribute the issue to the return of national spending rules, which require investments funded by external grants to be recorded as municipal spending. The council maintains that major projects, such as the Salguero II reservoir, the municipal parking lot, and the Angola-Boca Cascajos pumping station, rely heavily on outside funding, with the town contributing only 10% to 20% of the total costs.

Coalición Canaria, however, views the plan as proof of poor management. Spokesperson Jesús Quijada labeled the move a "covert economic intervention" and noted that this is the second time in eight years the current administration has been forced to adopt such a plan. The opposition argues that this pattern signals a failed economic policy that threatens the town’s financial independence.

The debate also centers on rising personnel and operating costs. The government attributes higher payroll expenses to mandatory state salary updates and necessary staffing adjustments, while blaming inflation for the increased cost of supplies. The opposition remains unconvinced, setting the stage for a heated political battle as both sides use the town’s finances to sharpen their arguments ahead of the upcoming elections.
