The town of Vilaflor de Chasna is hosting a year-long series of events to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the birth of Pedro de San José de Bethencourt, the Canary Islands' first saint and a pioneer in social work.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the birth of Pedro de San José de Bethencourt, the first saint born in the Canary Islands. To celebrate, the town of Vilaflor de Chasna is hosting a series of events that honor his legacy as a 17th-century pioneer in social work.

Brother Pedro remains a central figure for the Chasna-Isora region. His influence goes beyond the religious calendar—specifically the March 21st anniversary of his 1626 baptism—as he serves as a symbol of shared identity for the nine local municipalities that have named him their "perpetual mayor." This unique bond strengthens both the local community and its connection to the wider world.

The year-long program of events includes more than just traditional processions. It features educational initiatives, historical walking routes, and a traveling exhibition designed to introduce new generations to the life of a man who moved to Guatemala at age 25. Historians view his work—which included founding the Bethlemite Order and establishing the first convalescent hospital in Hispanic America—as an early example of universal healthcare for the marginalized.

The celebrations also have an international focus. In May, an official delegation will travel to La Antigua, Guatemala, to reinforce the historical ties between the Canary Islands and the Central American nation. This anniversary, managed by the local council, highlights how the legacy of Vilaflor’s most famous son continues to act as a bridge between two continents and a powerful symbol of social solidarity.
