Musicians from the Vienna Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Dresden will perform a collaborative "Metamorphosis" concert this Thursday at the Auditorio de Tenerife, featuring works by Arnold Schönberg and Richard Strauss.

Two of Europe’s most prestigious orchestras, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Staatskapelle Dresden, are joining forces for a special concert in the Canary Islands this Thursday. The event, titled Metamorphosis, will take place at the Auditorio de Tenerife at 7:30 p.m. It features a chamber ensemble made up of musicians from both orchestras, celebrating the long-standing artistic connection between Vienna and Dresden.

The program focuses on two major works that defined the musical shift of the 20th century. The first is Arnold Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). Inspired by the poetry of Richard Dehmel, this piece marked a turning point in Schönberg’s career as he began to push the boundaries of traditional music, eventually changing the landscape of modern composition forever.

The second piece, Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen, gives the concert its name. Written toward the end of World War II, this work serves as a powerful historical record. Originally composed for 23 string soloists—and adapted here for seven musicians by Rudolf Leopold—it acts as Strauss’s personal requiem for the collapse of European civilization. The choice of this music highlights how art can process collective trauma and the devastation of war.

This performance is more than just a showcase of challenging music; it highlights the vibrant cultural exchange between Central Europe’s greatest orchestras. With their shared history and long-standing collaboration, these musicians from Vienna and Dresden are uniquely prepared to bring these pillars of late Romantic and Expressionist music to life.
