Verano de Cuento Festival Returns to El Sauzal to Celebrate Oral Tradition
The 27th annual Verano de Cuento festival in El Sauzal is celebrating the Canary Islands' oral traditions with a diverse weekend lineup of storytelling, music, and lyrical improvisation.
The 27th annual Verano de Cuento festival is once again proving its importance as a pillar of oral tradition in the Canary Islands. Organized by Teatrofia and supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife, the El Sauzal City Council, and the DISA Foundation, the event has turned El Sauzal into a hub for storytelling.
The festival’s schedule offers something for everyone. This Friday at 9:00 p.m., the Teatro El Sauzal will host Ana Tovar and Fidel Galbán. Tovar will perform her take on classic Brothers Grimm tales, while Galbán will combine storytelling with live guitar music.
Saturday features two events. At 11:00 a.m., children can enjoy an interactive performance by GemaGe. Later that evening, at 9:00 p.m., the Plaza del Príncipe will host a lyrical improvisation show. Artists Rigor, Pinkk, and Lucky will create rhymes based on suggestions from the audience—a style that is becoming increasingly popular in the local urban scene.
More than just summer entertainment, the festival is part of a movement to reclaim public spaces for cultural sharing.
