Valle de Güímar Winery Sets New Standard for Canarian Viticulture
The Valle de Güímar Regional Winery has become a benchmark for Canarian viticulture, successfully blending traditional techniques with modern professionalization to earn international acclaim for its premium wines.
Canarian winemaking is reaching a new level of maturity, and the Valle de Güímar Regional Winery stands as a prime example of this success. By focusing on quality, the winery now earns around thirty awards every year, proving that wines from the Canary Islands can compete with the best in the world.
The winery operates as a cooperative, bringing together over 100 growers from Arafo, Güímar, and Candelaria. Its success shows how professionalizing the agricultural sector can lead to a premium product. During a recent visit, Canary Islands Minister of Agriculture Narvay Quintero and local officials praised the project, which has been operating since 1998.
The winery’s strength lies in blending family tradition with modern winemaking. Under the guidance of technical director Pedro Lorenzo, the winery has reached impressive heights, including a recent win for its Malvasía Aromática sparkling wine at the Sinve Awards, where it beat out major European competitors. This is just the latest in a long history of success at prestigious events like Agrocanarias, the Alhóndiga awards, and the Cervim mountain viticulture contest.
Despite these achievements, the winery faces real challenges. Current president José Bruno Albertos notes that the future of the industry depends on attracting a new generation of farmers to take over the land. While this is a common struggle across Spain, the Valle de Güímar winery remains a leader in the industry. With popular brands like Brumas de Ayosa and Pico Cho Marcial, the winery continues to prove that a commitment to training and high standards is the key to keeping this vital economic and cultural tradition alive.
