A Member of Parliament from the Canary Islands is demanding that the Spanish government resolve the water outage issue at the Tenerife II prison, expressing concerns about the working conditions of the staff and the security of the facility.

Kristina Valido, a deputy from the Canary Coalition (CC), has asked the Ministry of Interior to stop the water cuts in the Tenerife II prison. She says that it has a very negative impact on the working conditions of employees and the safety of the institution.

Valido wants Ángel Luis Ortiz, who is in charge of prisons, to explain what they plan to do to solve this problem. She also wrote a letter to the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to explain what is happening.

According to Valido, prison workers in the municipality of El Rosario complain that the water is turned off every day, and drinking water is only available for a limited time.

She added that this is not the first time, as the prison has problems with water every summer.

Valido said that employees are forced to wash their hands and go to the toilet in buckets. And prisoners are supplied with water in tanks.

The deputy believes that this has worsened working conditions and affects safety. It is also dangerous for health, especially when it is very hot.

She recalled that after the fire in 2023, which damaged the water supply, it was necessary to increase water tanks and make a separate water supply to the prison.

Valido asks why the water problem has not been solved yet, even though both the municipality of El Rosario and the trade unions have asked the state for help.

Therefore, she wants to know what the government plans to do urgently to provide the prison with water. And why the necessary work has not yet been done to ensure that there is always water.
