V16 Beacons: The Must-Have Gift Before Spain's 2026 Deadline
V16 emergency beacons, a popular gift in Tenerife, will be mandatory in Spain from 2026, but only DGT-approved models with specific features like geolocation will be valid to avoid fines.
With Three Wise Men's Day approaching, many in Tenerife are still searching for gift ideas. One practical and useful option that has become popular recently is the V16 emergency beacon.
From January 1, 2026, all vehicles in Spain will be required to carry this emergency device, making it a timely and perfect gift. However, it's important to note that not all V16 beacons are approved by the DGT (Spain's General Directorate of Traffic).
For a V16 beacon to be valid, it must meet specific criteria: it needs to be visible from one kilometer away, be officially approved, include geolocation, and emit a high-intensity, intermittent light that is visible 360 degrees for at least 30 minutes.
These DGT-approved beacons typically cost between 40 and 50 euros.
When activated, these beacons use an internal SIM card to connect directly with the DGT, sending the exact location of a broken-down vehicle. This information can then be displayed on roadside panels to warn other drivers about the emergency.
According to Spain's General Traffic Regulations, this signaling device is mandatory for passenger cars, mixed vehicles, goods transport vehicles up to 3,500 kg, and buses. While motorcycles are not legally required to carry one, safety officials strongly recommend it if possible.
Failing to carry a V16 emergency beacon from 2026 will result in an 80-euro fine. The penalty increases to 200 euros if a stopped vehicle is not properly signaled. The DGT advises keeping the beacon in an easily accessible spot, like the glove compartment or a door pocket, for quick use in an emergency.
