The University of La Laguna has maintained its position as the leading research institution in the Canary Islands, ranking 49th nationally in the 2026 U-Ranking due to its strong scientific output and high-quality academic performance.
The University of La Laguna (ULL) has once again proven its importance in the Spanish academic world, remaining the leading research institution in the Canary Islands. According to the 2026 U-Ranking, published by the BBVA Foundation and the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (IVIE), the Tenerife-based university holds a stable position, ranking 49th out of 71 public and private institutions.
The report, which uses data from the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, gives the ULL a global performance score of 66 points. This places the university above the national average for innovation and knowledge generation. The study analyzed 23 different indicators covering teaching, research, and job market success, finding that the university’s greatest strength is its scientific output. High-quality research, the impact of its publications, and international collaboration are the primary reasons for its strong standing.
In terms of teaching, the university maintains a solid foundation, supported by a good student-to-faculty ratio and a highly qualified teaching staff, most of whom hold doctoral degrees. Regarding graduate employment, the ULL performs in line with national averages, with a specific strength in matching academic training to the needs of the job market. This is especially evident in Science, Health Sciences, and Engineering and Architecture, where the university achieved high integration scores of 92, 89, and 83, respectively.
The 2026 U-Ranking, which reviewed over 3,600 degree programs, shows that the University of La Laguna remains consistent compared to other public universities of a similar size. The report highlights the institution's ability to maintain its research relevance in a highly competitive system where the ability to share and apply knowledge is increasingly important.
