The University of La Laguna is hosting playwright María Folguera for a discussion and a performance of her play, Marcela, una canción de Cervantes, as part of the institution's "Book Days" cultural initiative.

The University of La Laguna (ULL) is turning its focus to modern theater this week as part of its latest cultural program.

On Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., playwright María Folguera will join José Antonio Ramos Arteaga, head of the Philology Theater Group, for a discussion at the César Manrique General Classroom Building on the Guajara campus. This session will explore Folguera’s career and serve as a lead-up to her play, Marcela, una canción de Cervantes, which will be performed this Sunday at 7:00 p.m. in the university auditorium.

Folguera’s visit is part of the "Book Days: A Year to Inhabit the Word" initiative, a project designed to promote reading as a vital part of intellectual and social life throughout the year, rather than just around April 23rd. Folguera is a highly respected figure in the arts; she received the Community of Madrid’s Young Art Prize in 2001, a 2025 BBVA Foundation Leonardo Grant, and served as the director of Madrid’s Teatro Circo Price from 2018 to 2023.

In her writing, Folguera moves beyond simple biography. She uses theater to reinterpret historical and literary figures—such as Elena Fortún, Teresa of Ávila, Sappho, Goya, and Picasso—to challenge how we view our cultural history. Her visit highlights the importance of her work and reinforces the university’s role as a space for critical thinking and the exchange of ideas.
