Unidas se puede and Vox form unlikely alliance to unlock frozen La Laguna council funds

Administrative gridlock at the La Laguna City Council has triggered an unlikely political alliance. As reported by Diario de Avisos, Unidas se puede and Vox have joined forces to formally request that the council unfreeze a shared bank account containing over 200,000 euros in public funds, which have been inaccessible since the start of the current term.

The issue stems from the account’s legal requirements, which mandate the signatures of all three parties in the Mixed Group: Unidas se puede, Vox, and Drago Verdes Canarias. Because the third party has refused to cooperate, the funds remain locked. Consequently, Unidas se puede and Vox are asking the City Council to allow a simple majority vote to manage the money. Despite their deep ideological differences, the two parties are acting out of necessity: they must justify these expenditures before the end of the fiscal year, or the entire sum will be returned to the municipal treasury.

This situation dates back to agreements made after the 2023 elections regarding the distribution of resources, including staff salaries and committee leadership. However, the pact has collapsed, leaving the funds stagnant and unusable for day-to-day political operations.

For the La Laguna City Council, this is no longer just an internal dispute; it is a matter of financial oversight. The local government is legally required to ensure public subsidies are used correctly, and it must reclaim any funds that cannot be accounted for. Municipal legal services are now reviewing whether they have the authority to grant the request from Unidas se puede and Vox. The outcome will determine whether these parties can access the funds needed to cover their upcoming campaign expenses.
