Two nightclub security workers have been arrested in Arona, Tenerife, for allegedly assaulting a customer with an illegal extendable baton following an altercation near the Verónicas nightlife district.

Safety in Tenerife’s nightlife is back in the spotlight after a violent incident last weekend in Playa de las Américas. Two nightclub security workers have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a customer near the Starco shopping center in Arona.

The attack occurred early Sunday morning near the Verónicas area. The victim suffered a traumatic brain injury and required medical treatment, including stitches. According to police, the injury was caused by an extendable aluminum baton—a weapon prohibited for civilians and restricted solely to law enforcement.

While the investigation is ongoing, reports suggest the incident began with an argument inside the venue where the two men worked. After the assault, the suspects fled the scene. However, Arona Local Police had set up surveillance in the area, anticipating that the men might return. The pair were arrested when they came back to the shopping center, mistakenly believing the police had left.

This incident has reignited concerns about the regulation of private security in busy tourist areas. It is illegal for nightclub bouncers to carry extendable batons; their role is limited to surveillance and protection, and they are not authorized to use weapons. The two men are now in the custody of the National Police awaiting further legal proceedings.
