Two Injured in Serious Head-On Collision on Tenerife’s TF-1 Motorway
Two people were hospitalized following a serious head-on collision and vehicle fire on Tenerife's TF-1 motorway early Sunday morning.
Road safety on Tenerife is back in the spotlight following a serious head-on collision on the TF-1 motorway this Sunday. The accident occurred in the early hours of August 16 between Chimiche and Tajao, heading toward the island’s capital.
According to the Canary Islands’ emergency services (CECOES 112), the crash involved two cars and left two people injured. The impact was severe enough to cause one vehicle to overturn, trapping an occupant inside. As firefighters worked to cut the person free, they also had to extinguish a fire that had broken out in one of the cars.
Medical teams from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) arrived with both advanced and basic life support ambulances. One victim, who sustained multiple serious injuries, was rushed to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital. The second person, who suffered a head injury, was taken to the same hospital after receiving initial help from staff in a passing private ambulance who had alerted emergency services at 3:06 a.m.
The incident highlights the critical need for rapid response protocols on the island’s busiest roads. While road crews worked to clear the scene and restore traffic, the Civil Guard began an investigation. They are now working to determine the cause of the collision, looking into factors such as speeding, driver distraction, or drifting into the oncoming lane.
