Two Hungarian Drug Fugitives Arrested in Tenerife Following Elite Police Operation
Spanish police, supported by the elite GOES unit, arrested two Hungarian fugitives in Tenerife wanted for their roles in a record-breaking international drug trafficking operation.
A recent police operation in southern Tenerife highlights the success of European judicial cooperation in tracking down international criminal networks. Two Hungarian citizens, wanted in their home country for their roles in a major drug trafficking operation, were arrested on the island, proving that tourist areas are increasingly being used by fugitives trying to hide.
The case began in April 2025, when Hungarian authorities dismantled a massive cannabis cultivation operation. Police seized 6,289 plants and 58 kilograms of processed marijuana—the largest drug haul in the country’s history. The two suspects now face up to 20 years in prison for their involvement.
To avoid capture, the pair changed their appearances and used fake identification. However, police intelligence successfully tracked them to Tenerife. Because the suspects were trained in martial arts and potentially linked to local organized crime, the elite Special Operational Security Group (GOES) was called in to carry out the arrest.
The fugitives were apprehended on a public street as they approached their car. Despite putting up a strong physical fight, they were taken into custody and are now awaiting extradition. This operation underscores the importance of European arrest warrants in ensuring that Spain does not become a safe haven for those fleeing serious criminal charges elsewhere in the EU.
