Two drivers are facing criminal charges in Tacoronte, Tenerife, after separate weekend accidents involving alcohol levels significantly exceeding the legal limit.

Road safety in Tacoronte, Tenerife, was put at risk this past weekend following two separate accidents involving drunk drivers. Local police intervened in both cases, and both drivers are now facing criminal investigations.

The most serious incident occurred on Sunday on El Durazno Street. A 40-year-old man driving a Nissan van lost control and crashed into a parked car, which then hit a second vehicle. The impact was so severe that the van lost a wheel. Police breathalyzer tests showed the driver had an alcohol level of 1.31 and 1.27 mg/l—more than five times the legal limit of 0.25 mg/l and well above the 0.60 mg/l threshold that triggers criminal charges.

This was not an isolated incident. Just 48 hours earlier, on Friday, police were called to Hoya de Manzaneros Street in the Agua García area. A 52-year-old driver in a Citroën Xsara had crashed into a parked car. He recorded a breathalyzer result of 0.80 mg/l, also leading to criminal proceedings.

These accidents highlight the ongoing issue of dangerous driving, despite public awareness campaigns and stricter penalties. Under Spanish law, exceeding the 0.25 mg/l limit is an administrative offense, but once a driver exceeds 0.60 mg/l or shows clear signs of impairment, it becomes a criminal matter—a threshold both drivers significantly crossed this weekend.
