Two people have been arrested in southern Tenerife for allegedly holding an elderly patient against his will and defrauding him. The case has raised serious concerns about the safety of vulnerable patients within the healthcare system, particularly those who lack family support.
The investigation began after the victim reported the incident to the Civil Guard in Granadilla de Abona. According to police, a hospital orderly used her position to gain the patient’s trust while he was hospitalized, exploiting his physical frailty and isolation.
After the man was discharged, the orderly and an accomplice allegedly took him to a private home and held him there against his will. Once the victim managed to escape and contact the authorities, police quickly located and arrested the pair, who are now facing court proceedings.
Police are now investigating whether the suspects targeted other victims in the same way. Investigators are currently reviewing the orderly’s work history to see if other vulnerable patients may have been abused. Under the law, crimes involving the exploitation of a caregiving relationship are treated with particular severity, and the courts often consider this an aggravating factor when determining sentencing.
