Road safety is a major focus this summer, especially as more drivers hit the road with bike racks and bulky luggage. Traffic authorities are reminding motorists that following load-signaling rules is essential to avoiding accidents and costly fines.
Under Article 15 of the General Traffic Regulations, there are strict rules for carrying items in passenger cars. Generally, your load should not extend beyond the vehicle's perimeter. However, there are exceptions for items that cannot be divided: they may extend up to 15% of the vehicle's length, or 10% if the load can be divided.
To keep these items visible, you must use a V-20 sign. This is a 50x50 centimeter reflective panel with red and white diagonal stripes. It must be attached to the back of the load, perpendicular to the vehicle. If your load spans the entire width of the car, you must use two signs—one at each end. Otherwise, one sign is enough.
Importantly, your luggage or accessories must never block your lights, signals, or license plate. If a bike rack or load obscures these, you are legally required to add an extra lighting system and a duplicate license plate.
Failing to follow these rules—or failing to display the V-20 sign correctly—can result in fines of up to 200 euros. Traffic authorities emphasize that properly securing and marking your load is not just about avoiding a ticket; it is a vital step in keeping everyone safe on the road during the busy summer season.
