Tonny Tun Tun Clears 'Noche de Copas' Copyright Confusion, Praises Nueva Línea
Puerto Rican singer Tonny Tun Tun cleared up confusion regarding Nueva Línea's popular cover of his song 'Noche de copas', expressing happiness for their success while acknowledging the copyright issue over his arrangement.
Puerto Rican singer Tonny Tun Tun has cleared up the confusion surrounding the Tenerife orchestra Nueva Línea's version of his song 'Noche de copas'. Speaking to Televisión Española at the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Carnival Queen election gala on Friday, Tun Tun said he was happy about the Canarian group's success and denied any bad feelings.
The issue started when Nueva Línea's cover of 'Noche de copas' became very popular online. Tun Tun had previously told journalist Javi Hoyos that the group's version was "literally the same" as the one he produced in 2011. Later, he posted online that Nueva Línea hadn't asked for copyright permission. He argued that their version was based on his arrangement, not directly on María Conchita Alonso's original song. This is an important point for copyright law.
In his latest statement, Tun Tun wanted to make things clear, saying "they have made a version of a version, which is mine," and that there's a common "misunderstanding." This is important under Spanish Intellectual Property Law, which sees musical adaptations or arrangements as "derivative works." If they are original enough, they need permission from the person who owns the rights to the original work. He repeated that he was pleased with how popular Nueva Línea's version had become and that they had used his version as their starting point.
Finally, Tun Tun also publicly thanked Quevedo for mentioning him in his new song 'Ni borracho', showing his appreciation for the support.
