Three men were injured, one seriously, after a waste collection truck overturned on Tenerife’s TF-1 motorway early Wednesday morning.

Road safety on Tenerife’s major highways is back under scrutiny following a serious crash on the TF-1 motorway early Wednesday morning, May 13. According to the Canary Islands’ 112 emergency service, a waste collection truck overturned near the Guaza junction in Arona—an area known for heavy traffic during the night and early morning.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. and left three men injured. The rescue was difficult, as the 47-year-old driver was trapped inside the cabin. Firefighters had to cut him free before paramedics could stabilize him. He was rushed to Hospiten Sur in a medicalized ambulance with a serious traumatic brain injury.

The two other passengers, both 40, sustained minor injuries. They were transported by ambulance to the Hospital del Sur-El Mojón and Hospital Quirón Costa Adeje, respectively.

Emergency teams worked together to secure the scene and clear the road. While the Civil Guard and local police are still investigating the cause of the crash, road crews worked to clean the area and restore traffic. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks heavy vehicles face on the island’s expressways, where factors like driver fatigue and road conditions make strict adherence to safety protocols essential.
