Three UK residents have been charged with operating an organized theft ring that stole over 13,000 euros worth of tobacco from airport transit zones in Spain.

Security at airport transit zones is under scrutiny after police dismantled a ring dedicated to stealing tobacco. Three UK residents, aged 44 to 63, have appeared in court, facing charges of belonging to a criminal organization and committing 22 counts of theft.

Investigators from the Civil Guard’s Fiscal and Border Unit discovered that the group used a highly organized method. They would buy cheap airline tickets specifically to pass through security and enter the airport’s restricted shopping areas. Once inside, they worked as a team: some acted as lookouts while others stole the products. After gathering the goods over several days, they would leave the airport without boarding their flights and later smuggle the stolen tobacco into the UK in their checked luggage.

This case highlights the difficulty security forces face in monitoring busy airports while balancing passenger flow with the need to protect shops. The investigation, which led to arrests at Ibiza and Gran Canaria airports, estimates the total value of the stolen items at over 13,000 euros. Officers have already recovered more than 8,000 euros worth of merchandise.

The suspects are now awaiting trial for their role in the organized theft ring.
