A new bus lane will appear in Tenerife for €12 million to combat traffic jams.
A new 2.5-kilometer bus lane costing 12 million euros is planned to be built in Tenerife, connecting the HUC hospital and the Guajara university campus, in order to reduce congestion on the TF-5 highway.
A new bus lane will appear in Tenerife! It will be 2.5 kilometers long and cost 12 million euros. It is expected to be used by more than 25,000 passengers daily. This lane will connect the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) and the Guajara campus of the University of La Laguna – one of the busiest places on the northern TF-5 highway.
Currently, the Cabildo of Tenerife project, officially called "Extension of the TF-5 bus lane in the northern direction, phase II", has been submitted for public discussion. Everyone – from organizations to ordinary residents – can familiarize themselves with it.
The new lane will run parallel to the northern highway, between the hospital and the university campus. It will be an extension of the existing lane, opened in 2022 between the campus in Las Chumberas and the La Laguna station.
Thanks to these two projects, the total length of the lane, intended mainly for Titsa buses, will be 4.2 kilometers. This should reduce travel time and improve the traffic situation on the TF-5.
The project, which was published on September 17, 2025 in the Official Bulletin of the province, states that the main goal is to "improve public transport access between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna and reduce the impact of traffic jams on buses."
The new bus lane will include a "false tunnel" so that Titsa buses can bypass the Guajara roundabout. There will also be new exits, an improved drainage system, markings and landscaping.
In addition, a new bus stop will appear near the Santiago Martín Pavilion, which can be reached by a ramp from the street below. This will make public transport more accessible to everyone.
In parallel, the exit to the highway will be renovated and the Las Chumberas pedestrian bridge will be adapted to make it more convenient and safer for pedestrians. The project was developed by Proyma Consultores and approved by the Technical Service of Roads and Mobility of the Cabildo.
The surrounding landscape will also be put in order: damaged vegetation will be restored to make everything look harmonious.
A study conducted by the University of La Laguna in 2023 showed that the development of La Laguna and the university did not take into account the organization of traffic and the need to combat traffic jams, especially on the northern TF-5 highway.
The study emphasizes that the Guajara, Anchieta and Central campuses are located in the two most problematic places in terms of traffic jams on the TF-5: near the large shopping centers of Las Chumberas and at the Padre Anchieta roundabout, which is currently being reconstructed to reduce traffic jams.
In addition to the work already completed, such as the new interchanges on the La Esperanza road and the bus lane between the Guajara campus and the La Laguna bus station, other measures are planned: a new Anchieta pedestrian bridge, the organization of phased arrival of students to the university, shuttle buses and the extension of the bus lane from Guajara to HUC, which is currently being discussed.
