Spanish Language Day: Where in the Canary Islands will there be a holiday on Monday?
In Adeje, Tenerife, Monday, October 13, will be a holiday for the local festival of Saint Ursula, unlike the rest of the Canary Islands.
October 12th is Spanish Language Day in Spain, a national holiday. This year it falls on a Sunday, and many people are wondering if Monday, October 13th, will be a day off.
Usually, it is not. Most of the Canary Islands will be working as usual on this day.
But there is one exception in Tenerife. The city of Adeje has decided that Monday, October 13th, will be a local holiday. On this day, they honor Saint Ursula, the patron saint of the city.
Therefore, while everyone else on the island will be working, in Adeje people will be resting for another day after the celebration of Spanish Language Day.
In the Canary Islands, local holidays are determined annually by local authorities and approved by the regional government. This is why there are such small differences between cities.
