In Tenerife, pharmacies will become part of the emergency response system, ensuring the rapid delivery of medicines to evacuated residents.

In Tenerife, pharmacies will become assistance points during emergencies. The Cabildo (local authorities), together with pharmacists and drug distributors (Cofarte and Cofares), are negotiating to ensure that all 345 pharmacies on the island can quickly dispense and deliver medications in the event of a disaster.

Drug distributors promise to deliver everything necessary to any corner of the island to help evacuated people, the Cabildo stated.

Government officials and pharmacists met to discuss how to ensure that pharmacies operate smoothly as one large network in the event of an emergency.

They also discussed the EU-Modex training, where rescuers will practice responding to a volcanic eruption. This training will take place from September 22 to 28 in Garachico. Pharmacists and drug distributors will participate to practice how to quickly deliver medications during an evacuation.

"This training is a great opportunity to learn how to better respond to a volcanic eruption. We will be better prepared and know how to help people," says Blanca Pérez from the Cabildo. She believes that pharmacists and drug distributors can greatly help people who are in danger.

During the training in Garachico, three local pharmacies will dispense medications, pre-delivered from logistics centers, to people participating in the evacuation simulation.
