The Santa Cruz de Tenerife police have denied the fake news about a migrant sexually assaulting a woman in La Laguna, calling it a disinformation campaign.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife police have denied the lie about a migrant attacking a woman in La Laguna.

An official police representative stated that the information circulating on social media and on one website is false. It concerns an alleged sexual assault by a sub-Saharan African man on a woman near the Plaza del Cristo. According to the fake story, it happened after a funeral last Monday.

"This is a fake! Nothing like this happened, and we are not aware of any incidents in the Plaza del Cristo that would indicate this," the police representative emphasized. She added that the police leadership became interested in the fake due to its active spread. "There were different versions: last month, in July... But it's all untrue."

The fake was very detailed: it spoke of a taxi driver who rescued the woman, a certificate of injuries, and the arrest of the attacker. All this indicates that this is another disinformation campaign by the far-right, who are trying to link migration with crime, although statistics do not confirm this.

The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, also expressed concern about statements by parties such as Vox, which link immigration with crime. He mentioned a case in Madrid, where the party protested near a center for minors after a report of the rape of a 14-year-old girl by a resident of the center.

"Spreading false information about certain groups is irresponsible and can lead to a breach of public order," the minister warned.
