A garbage crisis is brewing in Arica: the opposition accuses the authorities of inaction
The municipality of Arico in the Canary Islands is facing a garbage crisis due to the unstable operation of the garbage collection service and the lack of response from the authorities to proposals to improve the situation.
A garbage problem is brewing in the municipality of Arico! The Canarian Coalition (CC) is raising the alarm about the "terrible instability" in the service responsible for garbage removal and street cleaning.
They say that employees are barely surviving on salaries of just over 1,000 euros, and the equipment is old and constantly breaking down. Add to this broken containers, and you get a picture of neglect throughout the city, says Víctor García, a representative of the CC.
He recalled that a year ago, they offered the authorities a plan to improve the situation: to update equipment, improve working conditions, install more containers, including those for organic waste, and organize mobile garbage collection points throughout the municipality. Everything was thought out in detail, with technical calculations and economic justification.
But, according to García, the PSOE (local authorities) rejected the proposal, promising that they would work on it themselves. "A year has passed, and nothing has changed! No changes, no new contract, no improvements. The same promises that we have already heard regarding other projects, such as the square or the swimming pool in La Jaca," he concluded.
