Archaeologists are sounding the alarm about the destruction of the Arca de Tajao in Arico due to uncontrolled tourism and the inaction of the authorities in granting it protected status.
The group of archaeologists Imastanen is sounding the alarm about the state of the Tajo Arch, a unique natural site in Arico. They warn that a large number of tourists, video shooting, and white graffiti in the form of arrows are harming this picturesque area.
Archaeologists criticize the authorities for inaction. In their opinion, the Tajo Arch is under threat, as it still does not have the status of a natural reserve or cultural heritage site, although the municipality promised this back in 2021.
Imastanen emphasizes that Arico is a real treasure trove of archaeological and ethnographic sites of Tenerife. Previously, there was no active development here, which allowed preserving the traditional way of life associated with agriculture, as well as the memory of the Guanche culture. But now Arico is suffering from interference in the landscape, and the Tajo Arch is another example of this.
Archaeologists remind that they have repeatedly spoken about the destruction of historical sites in the region. They accuse the local authorities of ignoring the problem, and valuable objects are disappearing. Despite the law on the protection of cultural heritage of the Canary Islands, Arico still does not have a municipal register of monuments.
The Tajo Arch is located in the Vijigua ravine, which is of great geological, biological, and historical importance. People have lived here since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous rock paintings, remains of dwellings, and burial sites. The gorge was an important place for the Guanches, as there were sources of water and pastures here.
Once upon a time, Chasna stone was mined here, from which palaces and churches were built throughout the Canary Islands and even in America. Therefore, the Vijigua ravine was an important transport route, and the local port was used to trade this stone.
The Tajo Arch is a natural arch made of volcanic rock, created by erosion. This place impresses with its bizarre rocks and colorful colors. Here you can see rare animals and plants. The Tajo Arch has become a popular tourist destination, which is actively advertised. But, according to Imastanen, such uncontrolled tourism will lead to the destruction of this unique object.
