In Trieste, the Harvest Festival was canceled due to the threat of the spread of phylloxera, a vineyard pest, and restrictions were introduced on the transportation of grapes.

In the city of Tegueste, all celebrations related to the Harvest Festival have been canceled. This is due to Order No. 116/2025 of August 20, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Canary Islands.

The reason is to prevent the spread of phylloxera, a pest found in the vineyards of Tenerife.

The city authorities agreed on this decision with local winemakers (AVITE) and residents of the Lomo and La Padilla areas.

What was canceled:

  • The "Harvest for Hope" event
  • The best grape bunch competition
  • The motorcade, which was to take place on September 12 and 13
  • All other festive events

Also, at the gala concert where the Queen of Remedios and the Harvest Festival are chosen, the Harvest Queen will not be chosen this year.

The mayor of the city, Norberto Padilla, said that this is a responsible decision to protect local farmers and the interests of all residents. He emphasized the need to cooperate with other authorities.

Councilor Maura Martel added that the cancellation of events is necessary, and they will look for other ways to support life in the city without risking the health of plants.

The environmental advisor, Julián Rodríguez, warned about the danger posed by this pest and asked people to help in the fight against it.

The Government of the Canary Islands ordered that any suspicion of phylloxera must be immediately reported to the relevant organization that controls the quality of wine, or to the agency that deals with agriculture.

What is prohibited:

  • Transporting grapes, seedlings, tools, boxes, or soil between the islands and different areas of the same island.
  • Exporting grapes from Tenerife to other islands and from the Tacoronte-Acentejo area.
  • Importing grapes from other islands to Tenerife and between the islands, unless there is a special permit from the General Directorate of Agriculture.
  • In Tenerife, the transportation of grapes between areas where different varieties of wine are produced is also limited, and a permit is also required for this.

If transportation is allowed, the transport and containers must be free of plants, and the cargo must be transported in closed vehicles or under tarpaulin or netting. It is also necessary to wash the transport and boxes when moving from one place to another, and disinfect the tools between farms.

The Tegueste City Council promises to inform people about the situation and do everything possible to protect the countryside, local viticulture, and plant health.
