In the Canary Islands, a court upheld a 25-year prison sentence for a man who killed his ex-wife and injured her son, also ordering him to pay €370,000 in compensation to the victim's family.

In the Canary Islands, a court upheld the sentence of 25 years in prison for a man who murdered his ex-partner on January 8, 2023, in Adeje, Tenerife. He did not appeal, so the verdict is final.

The court upheld the previous decision, according to which the man must also pay a fine of 370,000 euros. The jury found him guilty of murder. The deceased is known to be a mother of four.

Of the 25 years, he received 23 for the knife murder, considering it was domestic violence and gender-based. Another year and ten months for injuring his stepson, who was trying to protect his mother.

The monetary compensation will be divided as follows: 250,000 euros to the four children for the death of their mother and moral damages, 20,000 euros to the son who was injured, and 25,000 euros to each of the four children for moral damages.

The jury trial lasted five days. The jurors quickly found the man guilty, considering the aggravating circumstances – family ties and gender motive.

It is known that the couple was married for 10 years, during which they constantly argued, separated, and got back together. On December 28, 2022, after a statement from the woman, the man spent several days in prison.

The defendant's lawyer immediately admitted his guilt and asked for 16.5 years for the murder and the minimum term for injuring his stepson. He also asked for a mitigation of the sentence because, according to him, the man was drunk, used drugs and pills, so he does not remember anything.

The two older children spoke about the abuse of their mother and themselves, which lasted for years and ended on the night they saw their stepfather attack their mother near the house.

All witnesses assured that the man did not look drunk. His colleagues confirmed that they had heard him threaten to kill his ex-partner.

Experts stated that death was instantaneous from a single stab wound. The psychologist denied that the man was not aware of what he was doing, even if he used alcohol, pills, or cocaine, and questioned his amnesia.

Additionally, the man was forbidden from approaching the children for 35 years, and the older son who tried to stop the attack for 45 years.
