In the Canary Islands, the third lane on the TF-5 will be completed by the end of 2025 for €66 million.
The Canary Islands plan to complete the construction of a third lane on the TF-5 highway from Guamasa to Los Rodeos Airport by the end of 2025, allocating over 66 million euros.
The government of the Canary Islands plans to complete the construction of a third lane on the TF-5 highway, on the section from Guamasa to Los Rodeos Airport, by the end of 2025. More than 66 million euros will be allocated for this purpose. The money will come from the agreement between the Canary Islands and the state on road development, which will be in effect until 2030.
According to Pablo Rodriguez, who is responsible for roads, transport, and housing, the tender for the execution of the works will be announced in the near future. This project was "frozen" many years ago, but it has now been resumed because permission for an environmental impact assessment has been obtained. Construction is not allowed without this permit.
The TF-5 is one of the busiest roads in the Canary Islands, especially in the direction of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The new lane is expected to increase the road's capacity, reduce congestion, and make traffic safer.
It is planned that the third lane will help to better distribute traffic flows and reduce travel time, especially during peak hours.
In addition to the road expansion, the project includes quality control of the works and measures to protect the environment. Two junctions will also be reconstructed, and a new access road to Los Rodeos Airport will be built.
These works are part of a large plan that combines the construction of new roads with nature protection. The Ministry of Ecology insists that all such projects include measures for environmental protection.
The works on the TF-5 are financed by an agreement between the Canary Islands and the state, which provides for the construction and repair of roads on all the islands until 2030. This agreement has made it possible to continue projects that have already started and to prepare tenders for new ones.
In addition, the latest amendment to the agreement removed a clause that hindered the construction of new roads. This simplifies future planning and prepares the ground for the next agreement.
It is known that as of 2025, the Canary Islands have received 73.3 million euros for road projects. More than 43% of this money has already been used, and there are expenditure commitments for more than 73% of the total budget.
