Spain has allocated funds for the exhumation of victims of the Franco regime.
Spain will finance the exhumation of victims of the Franco regime in Fuencaliente, allocating almost 100,000 euros to the local administration of La Palma.
The Spanish Minister of Historical Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced that the state will finance the exhumation of victims of the Franco regime in the town of Fuencaliente. Almost 100,000 euros have already been allocated for this purpose, which were transferred to the local administration of the island of La Palma back in June.
On Wednesday, Ángel Víctor Torres met with representatives of the La Palma Historical Memory Association. During the meeting, they discussed the progress of preparations for the exhumation, for which the ministry has already allocated funds.
Torres thanked the organization for its "important and exemplary work." He also promised to organize an event on the island to honor the memory of families who suffered persecution, imprisonment, or were killed during the civil war and the Franco dictatorship "for their commitment to democracy."
The Minister emphasized that this is the first time that the Spanish government has allocated money to local authorities for historical memory recovery measures. Such an initiative is also in place on the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura.
"These funds will be allocated on an ongoing basis," Torres assured. He confirmed that the government seeks to establish the truth, restore justice, redress damages, and prevent the recurrence of tragic events, because "the democracy we now enjoy came at a high price, and we must protect it."
The head of the department also noted the good cooperation between various institutions in the Canary Islands, where representatives of various political forces are involved in the exhumation, which is "an excellent example" for others.
