'The Smoke of Progress' Exhibition Opens at San Felipe Castle in Puerto de la Cruz
The San Felipe Castle in Puerto de la Cruz is hosting the traveling exhibition "The Smoke of Progress," which honors the historical role of the Correíllo La Palma steamship in connecting the Canary Islands.
The maritime history of the Canary Islands has a new home at the San Felipe Castle in Puerto de la Cruz, which is now hosting a traveling exhibition dedicated to the Correíllo La Palma. According to Museos de Tenerife, the exhibition—which has already toured Santa Cruz, La Gomera, and La Palma—aims to highlight the vital role this ship played in connecting the islands.
The choice of venue is significant. Puerto de la Cruz has a long history with the steamship trade that began in the late 19th century, helping to end the geographical isolation of the islands. Titled The Smoke of Progress, the exhibition serves as a look back at the industrial and social history of the region, celebrating a vessel that was a key witness to the modernization of transport in the Canary Islands.
The exhibition is open to the public until April 13th. Visitors can attend from Tuesday to Saturday, with sessions running from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Through this display, organizers hope to showcase the ship’s technical legacy and encourage visitors to reflect on how maritime travel shaped the identity and economy of the archipelago over the last century.
