In Tenerife, residents of La Rambla are protesting again due to the dangerous exit onto the TF-5.
The residents of La Rambla in Tenerife will protest again due to the lack of funding for a safe exit from the TF-5 highway, accusing the authorities of ignoring their requests.
Residents of the La Rambla district, near the coast of San Juan de la Rambla, are planning another protest. They are demanding that a safe exit from the TF-5 highway finally be built.
The local organization "All with La Rambla" already protested in this way in 2022. Back then, they gathered every Sunday at the dangerous intersection leading to their district.
People decided to take to the road again because the local authorities of Tenerife did not allocate enough money in the 2025 budget for a project that would solve the problem with the intersection. In addition, the authorities did not respond to their appeals at all during the year. "Complete silence," say representatives of the organization.
The protest is scheduled for next Sunday, October 26, on the main road in northern Tenerife. This was announced by Adela Abreu, a representative of "All with La Rambla". "Due to the fact that we are being ignored, we decided that we will start protests on the TF-5. If there is no progress in solving our serious problem, the La Rambla district will continue to suffer," they say. It has not yet been decided whether the protests will be regular, as they were three years ago.
Residents of the district met with the mayor of San Juan de la Rambla, Juan Ramos, to tell him about the situation. "We know that they are already starting to draw up the budget for 2026, and we are afraid that the same thing will happen as in 2025," says a representative of the organization. "We were promised that four million euros would be allocated in the budget – this is the total cost of the already developed project. But only 75,000 euros were allocated. We don't know where this meager money went, and we want to find out," she adds.
According to the residents of La Rambla, Damaso Arteaga, the road advisor, promised to meet with them back in March. "But these were just words and promises that he did not fulfill. He assured in the media that he would do everything, and the tender would be announced, and the work would begin in 2025," adds Abreu. The island councilor did not respond to El Día's request.
"We are tired of winding an extra six kilometers to get to Santa Cruz. Tired of risking our lives waiting on the TF-5 to get home. Tired of seeing tourists and locals running across the road to the bus stop or the district without any safety. We are very tired of the fact that no one cares about road safety in La Rambla," they conclude.
The project, which should solve the problem with the intersection to La Rambla from the TF-5, costs more than five million euros. It offers four options, and the nearly 1,000-page document explains why a combination of the first and third options was chosen.
This analysis proposes making an oval interchange under the TF-5 in order not to affect the archaeological zone, which is a cultural heritage site. It is also planned to raise the level of the TF-5 highway to provide more space under the slab and reduce excavations in this area.
The project also includes pedestrian crossings, which the residents of La Rambla have been asking for so much. According to the project, "thanks to the new interchange, pedestrians will be able to safely reach bus stops and a recreation area from the La Rambla district." People will be able to cross the road at pedestrian crossings "at all intersections," the statement said.
