A waste treatment plant has stopped operating in Tenerife: Socialists are raising the alarm about an environmental disaster.
The waste treatment plant for yellow containers on Tenerife has stopped operating due to breakdowns and lack of maintenance, raising concerns about waste accumulation and environmental risks.
A factory on Tenerife that processes waste from yellow bins has stopped operating. This happened last Sunday and is unlikely to be operational until Thursday. This was stated by socialists in the local council, and the island's authorities do not deny it.
Javier Rodríguez Medina, a councilor from the Socialist Party, says this is a "serious problem." He explains that waste from yellow bins is simply not being recycled now. In addition, the location of the factory, La Piconera, is not suitable for waste storage. Another problem is the unpleasant odor that can be smelled all the way to the highway, as well as the proliferation of rodents.
The socialists explain that the factory stopped due to breakdowns. Several conveyor belts broke down because they were not serviced in time. The drum axis also broke. And there are no spare parts to fix everything quickly.
Javier Rodríguez emphasizes that this is not just an accidental breakdown, but a result of negligence. As a result, the factory that processes waste from all yellow bins on the island is not working. He believes that the closure of the factory is very serious and shows that the island's authorities are not fulfilling their obligations.
Blanca Pérez, the island's councilor for environmental issues, has not yet commented on this statement by the socialists. Javier Rodríguez emphasizes that since Sunday, waste has been accumulating in La Piconera, which creates environmental and sanitary risks. He asks, what is the point of people sorting waste if it is then simply dumped in a pile due to negligence and lack of planning?
The socialists warn that this is just one case of many that show how poorly Blanca Pérez manages environmental issues. They recall two fires at the waste recycling complex, a fatal industrial accident, the worst recycling rates in 40 years, stalled important projects, and unfulfilled promises.
The Socialist Party councilor, who was previously responsible for environmental issues, believes that the current government has brought the waste situation to its worst state in the island's history. In his opinion, Blanca Pérez cannot remain in her position because her actions only worsen the situation and show disrespect for the people.
