Santa Cruz is developing a new city development plan until 2026 to correct the shortcomings of the previous one and create more housing, jobs, and recreation areas.
Santa Cruz is developing a new city development plan. The team working on it (the city administration and architects from Coderch) met with the Councilor for Development, Zaida González. They discussed the progress of the work. The main goal of the plan is to make the city more livable: more affordable housing, convenient transportation, beautiful places for recreation, as well as economic development and new jobs.
The councilor said that they want to complete the plan by the end of 2026 and submit it to the city council for approval. But everything depends on how quickly other organizations provide the necessary documents. She emphasized that the new plan is very important for the city. It should correct the mistakes of the previous plan from 2013, which was canceled by the court, and take into account the needs of the city in the future.
According to González, the old plan had shortcomings, especially in some areas that needed to be better planned. The new team is working on this. And even the older plan, from 1992, is completely unsuitable because it is outdated and forces decisions to be made as if it were 30 years ago.
At the meeting, lawyers hired by the city administration reported that they had almost completed the analysis of the situation in the city. They collected a lot of information, held meetings with various specialists, checked the island's development plans, and took into account the impact on state facilities (the port, the Ministry of Defense) and air routes.
The mayor of the city, José Manuel Bermúdez, hopes that the new plan will give impetus to the development of the city. It will help create new opportunities for housing construction, improve the waterfront, and implement the Santa Cruz Verde 2030 project.
After the initial approval of the plan, it will be shown to the public and given the opportunity to express their comments and suggestions. This will help make the plan even better.
