Basketball player Carmelo Cabrera will be awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen" of La Laguna.
The La Laguna City Council plans to award basketball player Carmelo Cabrera Domínguez the title of "Honorary Citizen" for his contribution to the development of basketball and his connection to the city.
The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, plans to propose to the city council in October that the basketball player from the Canary Islands, Carmelo Cabrera Domínguez, be named "Honorary Citizen."
The city authorities want to recognize his professional achievements and contribution to the development of basketball both locally and internationally.
The mayor noted that Carmelo Cabrera has close ties to the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. He spent a significant part of his successful career here, playing for the "Baloncesto Canarias" club from 1981 to 1988 and playing 123 official matches.
"Carmelo is a symbol and legend of our sport. Although he was born in Gran Canaria, he was part of one of the most successful teams in the club's history. We believe that he is an example for many residents of La Laguna who love basketball," the mayor added.
Cabrera was successful not only in "Canarias," but also in "Real Madrid," where he won ten championships, seven Cups, three Intercontinental Cups, and two European Championships.
In addition, Carmelo Cabrera successfully played for the Spanish national team, playing over a hundred matches.
He participated in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and won a silver medal at the European Basketball Championship in Barcelona in 1973.
Cabrera was the top assistant in the top league of Spanish basketball in the 1983/84 and 1984/85 seasons, when he played for the team from La Laguna. He ended his career on April 23, 1988, playing for "Baloncesto Canarias," and left a bright mark on the city.
Fans still remember him as a symbol on and off the court, for the values he promoted, his charisma, and participation in charitable sports events.
