A swimming pool for farmers is being built in Tenerife for 8.5 million euros.
On Tenerife, the Las Charquetas pool is being built at a cost of 8.5 million euros to provide farmers with treated water for irrigating 1,200 hectares of land and to reduce the use of groundwater.
In Tenerife, the Las Charquetas pool is being built to help local farmers. It is said that this will solve the problem of water for irrigation.
Valentin Gonzalez, who is responsible for agriculture on the island, explained that the pool will help use treated water instead of groundwater or desalinated water. And less water will be discharged into the sea.
Construction began a year ago, and more than half has already been completed – 55%. It costs more than 8.5 million euros. The money is provided by the European Union (80%) and the local authorities of Tenerife (20%).
Thanks to this project, farmers will be able to better irrigate their fields. This concerns 1,200 hectares of land in the areas of Guía de Isora, Santiago del Teide and Adeje. This will help 104 farmers.
The pool will be large – it will hold 250,000 cubic meters of water, and its walls will be 16 meters high. Treated water from the station in Adeje-Arona will be collected there. And in the future, possibly from another station – in Guía de Isora. This way, farmers will have more water for irrigation.
This pool is an important part of the plan to improve the water supply system in the south of the island. The Spanish government and the local authorities of Tenerife are working together on this. The main goal is to provide farmers with water for irrigation, especially in this arid area.
It is said that the construction of the Las Charquetas pool will help solve the problem of water shortage, reduce discharges into the sea and preserve the island's groundwater.
In addition, pipes are also being built to connect the Arona-Adeje treatment plant with the Las Charquetas pool. When everything is completed, the island will have a closed system of treated water.
