"Island of Lies" is based on real events. It tells the story of a tragedy that occurred in 1921 when the ship Santa Isabel sank off the island of Sálvora (Galicia). Three brave women from the island risked their lives to save 48 people. The film shows the heroism of these women and recreates an important page in the history of Galicia.
The film was first shown at the Shanghai Film Festival. It also participated in competitions at festivals in San Sebastian and Almeria, where it received numerous awards, including five Mestre Mateo Awards and the Blogos de Oro for Best Film.
The film stars well-known actors: Nerea Barros (winner of the Goya Award for Best New Actress in "Marshland"), Victoria Teijeiro, Ana Oca, and Argentine actor Darío Grandinetti (star of Spanish cinema, known for the films "Talk to Her" and "Julieta").
Director Paula Cons has extensive experience in cinema. She has directed films such as "My Distinguished Friend" (about the relationship between Galdós and Pardo Bazán) and documentaries such as "Where is Marta?" (Netflix) and "The Unknown Battle" (SEMINCI). Paula Cons received the Mulleres no Foco Award, actively supports feminism, and teaches at film schools throughout Spain.
By opening the festival with the film "Island of Lies," INSULARIA emphasizes its goal of being a platform for communication between the islands of the world through cinema, paying special attention to women's voices and historical memory.
