The senator from La Gomera insists on the construction of the Fonsalía port as an alternative for the "green" islands.
Senator Fabián Chinea is calling for a review of the Fonsalía port project as an alternative for connecting the "green" islands, while also demanding the acceleration of the construction of the road to the port of Los Cristianos.
Senator Fabián Chinea from the island of La Gomera proposes that the governments of Spain and the Canary Islands re-discuss the idea of building the Fonsalía port. He believes that it could be an alternative for transporting people and goods to the "green" islands. The political party ASG, to which the senator belongs, believes that this project should be considered in order to find a solution that suits everyone. Chinea emphasizes that it is necessary to combine ecology and improve maritime communication, which is needed by the residents of La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro.
When asked about the construction of a new port in the south of Tenerife, the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, replied that the government of the Canary Islands and local authorities are against this project. Therefore, according to him, the regional authorities have not submitted any proposal that has received sufficient support to pass an environmental assessment. It is worth recalling that the Parliament of the Canary Islands has already rejected the construction of the Fonsalía port.
Fabián Chinea also called on the governments to speed up the construction of the road to the port of Los Cristianos. He believes that this is important to improve road connections between Tenerife and La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro. The senator emphasized that this work was planned back in 2018 in an agreement between the governments of Spain and the Canary Islands. He believes that it is time to resolve this issue and facilitate access to the port.
Chinea emphasized that improving the port of Los Cristianos and the access roads to it is very important for the residents of the "green" islands. Councils such as the council of La Gomera, which seek to improve maritime and air connections for islands suffering from isolation, are particularly interested.
According to Chinea, strengthening the dam (for which 5.3 million euros have been allocated), reorganizing the port area, and building a new underground access to the port are not enough if the problem of port congestion as a whole is not resolved. The senator believes that important decisions are needed, not just partial measures. He also noted that the port authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is willing to improve the situation in the port of Los Cristianos.
