Tenerife allocates €750,000 for the renovation of the Febles Campos center due to delays in the construction of the new hospital.
The Cabildo of Tenerife has allocated 751,660 euros to improve the conditions at the Febles Campos center, including the renovation of bathrooms and changing rooms, while the search for a new location continues.
The Cabildo of Tenerife plans to improve conditions at the Febles Campos center until a new hospital is built. To this end, funds have been allocated for the renovation of bathrooms, changing rooms, and other premises. The announcement of the commencement of works worth €751,660 has already been published in the official bulletin.
The Institute of Social Care (IASS) supports this renovation because it is urgently needed. Previously, it was planned to move the center to another location, but this will take more time. Therefore, the 2025 budget provides funds for repairs, maintenance, and new equipment. Last year, €680,000 was already spent on this. The main thing now is to improve conditions at the center, rather than relocate 250 patients and 500 employees.
Authorities plan to renovate the Febles Campos building at least until 2027. Previously, the government wanted to move the center, but this was prevented by litigation. Disputes over the possible location of the new building have been ongoing since 2021, but no agreement has been reached.
The €751,660 is planned for:
- Renovating bathrooms for people with disabilities and changing rooms (€394,123).
- Replacing plumbing and flooring (€166,082).
- Renovating the dining room, warehouse, utility room, and arranging a waste disposal area, as well as a ramp (€7,724).
- Taking care of waste disposal (€7,130).
- Strengthening security measures (€15,263).
Councilor of the Department Águeda Fumero recalled that plans to move patients to better conditions failed last time. She believes that this will take time, so it is now important to improve conditions at the center. According to her, the authorities are working with employees and patients to find the best solutions.
There have been two previous attempts to move the center. Initially, they wanted to buy a building in the Cabo Llanos area in 2018. Then, in 2020, a move to the Diocesan Seminary was planned, but this was prevented by litigation.
The Cabildo also plans to tender for works in other social complexes. One of them, in Añaza, will be able to temporarily accommodate some of the patients and staff of Febles Campos, but not all. There are plans to create 170 residential places and 30 places for day care.
The situation with social assistance in Tenerife is currently difficult. Many people need help but cannot get it. Águeda Fumero apologized to those waiting for help but noted that 518 places had been created in two years. Her predecessor, Marian Franquet, believes that this is not enough, as the demand for assistance is constantly growing.
Due to the lack of public centers, many people cannot get the help they need. Demand is growing due to the aging population, and private institutions cannot provide enough places, and not everyone can afford them.
