In the fishing village of San Andrés, the historic vessel "Corbeta," a symbol of local maritime traditions, is being restored with community funds.

In the fishing village of San Andrés, the restoration of the historic vessel "Corbeta" has begun. Local residents themselves proposed this idea and voted for it. Almost 15,000 euros have been allocated for the project. Thus, the city council of Santa Cruz supported the community's initiative and the preservation of local heritage.

The work is expected to last about a month. After that, the renovated vessel will return to its place and once again become the pride of San Andrés.

The "Corbeta" was previously restored in 2021 by the local community. The Anaga district decided to allocate funds for additional restoration, as the vessel was damaged by bad weather. The "Corbeta" once belonged to Manuel Fernández, known as Manolo El Chocolate. For many years, he transported fish on it, which he then shared with the residents of the village.

Previously, the vessel was anchored near Las Teresitas beach. After the first repair, it was moved ashore to protect it from the waves. Then, a public organization decided to install the "Corbeta" near the San Andrés Castle, another local landmark.

Currently, the Anaga district is implementing its participatory budget, restoring the historical symbol of the village's maritime activity.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, emphasized that this is not just a repair of the vessel, but the preservation of the heritage of the fishermen who made fishing not only a job but also a way of life. It is a tribute to their work, history, and wisdom, which they passed down from generation to generation.

The councilor of Anaga, Gladys de León, added that the "Corbeta" is a symbol of San Andrés, which reminds of the maritime traditions and the life of local residents. The restoration of the vessel is one of the latest projects being implemented within the framework of the participatory budget of the Anaga district.

Thanks to the participatory budget, residents can decide for themselves where to invest funds to improve life in their area.

Last year, the Anaga district carried out construction work worth almost 99,000 euros. In particular, roads were repaired, lighting was installed, and sidewalks were improved.

In addition to the restoration of the "Corbeta," the Atalaja Semaphore Interpretation Center was opened in Igueste de San Andrés in December last year.

Gladys de León noted that the Anaga district is implementing most of the projects planned within the framework of the participatory budget. The total amount of these projects is 118,000 euros. Among them are the installation of a roof over the stage in Igueste de San Andrés and the improvement of pedestrian safety on the Taganana road in San Andrés.
