In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the garbage disposal tax will increase by 50% from next year due to the requirements of European legislation, although benefits for vulnerable populations will be maintained.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the garbage disposal tax will increase by 50% starting next year. The local finance councillor, José Alberto Díaz-Estebanes, says that this is a "forced" measure that he does not like.
Why is this happening? The thing is that Spain has to comply with the requirements of European legislation. And from January 1, 2026, these requirements will be shifted to the city councils.
Currently, residents pay an average of 70 euros for garbage disposal, but it will be 105 euros. The amount will depend on the size of the dwelling, its value, and the number of residents.
The city council promises that "smart" containers will be installed in the future. They will determine how much garbage each person throws away and encourage those who sort waste.
Previously, part of the tax was covered by Cabildo de Tenerife (the organization that manages waste) and the city council.
Councillor Díaz-Estebanes complained that people were not explained the reasons for the price increase. They say that they will have to pay more, but they will not see improvements immediately.
He also assured that tax benefits will be maintained for vulnerable populations, for those whose housing is vacant, and for residents whose containers are located far from their homes (more than 200 meters).
But property owners who rent it out to tourists will not receive benefits. This decision was made by the city council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
